Abstract

The study examined the ways by which the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can transform community education for socio-economic development among artisans in Osun state, Nigeria. The descriptive survey design was used for the study. Three research questions were raised for the study. The workforce in the informal sector of economy in Nigeria comprises of a great percentage of artisans. Their contribution to the development of the economy cannot be over emphasized and it is not an understatement. In view of the global trends, the use of ICT and modernized technologies in reforming community education delivery have become quite crucial due to its empowering nature on young and old adults for self-development, community development and national growth. The population for the study comprised 300 artisans in Osun state. Through simple random sampling technic150 participants were selected for the study. Self-developed questionnaire, interview and observation were used to gather information for the study and the questionnaire was validated by experts in the field of education. The data collected were analyzed using frequency counts, percentage and weighted means. Findings from the study revealed that there are; lack of literacy skills, inability to use some ICT tools, non-availability of ICT tools which contributed to the challenges of individuals’ use of ICT for development. Based on the findings from the study it was recommended that government should come up with policy improvement in community education programmes for urban and rural dwellers in Nigeria. That there should be promotion and sensitization of ICT products and tools for usage to ease the work needs and challenges of community members in our communities across Osun State and the nation at large for further human development and growth.
