Abstract

The issiue examines the role of inferences in text comprehension, emphasizing that to fully understand a text, it is essential to integrate the read information with the reader's prior knowledge. The inference process allows for connecting textual and extratextual information, forming a coherent and enriched mental representation of the text. The text distinguishes two main categories of inferences: local and global inferences, and necessary and elaborative inferences. Local inferences connect nearby elements in the text, while global inferences link distant parts, requiring more complex processing. Necessary inferences are crucial for understanding the text, while elaborative inferences enrich the reading without being essential for comprehension. The ability to infer correctly improves with age and depends on the ability to quickly access prior knowledge.
