Abstract

Professional, school, and university guidance is a crucial component of the European Union’s economic, educational, and cultural policies. Starting from this premise, the essay will offer some thoughts on the relationship between guidance and the goals of equality between women and men as well as on countering stereotypes and gender discrimination, as these goals are essential to social equity, sustainable development, and skills enhancement. The underlying thesis of this contribution is that this has not happened in Italy, despite the promotion of gender equality being constantly invoked and championed by major guidance documents at the policy level of the European Union,. Moreover, there are still deep-rooted gender disparities in both the school and the professional choices of girls and boys. The phenomenon of "formative segregation" in particular has been analyzed, interpreting it as a litmus test of the gender inequalities still found in our school and academic system.
